If you are building a smart home, the first big decision is which voice assistant runs it. Amazon’s Echo devices use Alexa; Google’s Nest devices use Google’s assistant, now being upgraded with Gemini. Both control lights, plugs, thermostats and cameras, both play music and both answer questions — but they have different strengths.

Switching later is a hassle, so it is worth getting this right. Here is how the two ecosystems compare in 2026.

Quick verdict

  • Choose Amazon Echo ifyou want the widest choice of devices and smart home gadgets, or you shop with Prime.
  • Choose Google Nest ifyou use Android, Gmail and Google Calendar and want the best answers to general questions.
  • OverallAmazon Echo, by a small margin, for smart home control.

Voice assistants

Both assistants have been rebuilt around generative AI. Alexa+ holds more natural conversations and can complete multi-step tasks, like finding a restaurant and booking a table. Google’s upgrade brings Gemini to Nest speakers and displays, with more conversational answers and better understanding of follow-up questions.

Historically Google has been stronger at general knowledge and understanding loosely phrased questions, while Alexa has been better at smart home commands and shopping. The AI upgrades narrow the gap, and availability of the newest features depends on your country and subscription.

Speakers and smart displays

Amazon has the broader hardware range. Echo spans tiny speakers, the premium Echo Studio, bedside clocks and smart displays from 5 to 15 inches. Google’s range is smaller: the Nest Mini and Nest Audio speakers and the Nest Hub displays. Nest Audio sounds very good for its size, and the Nest Hub has a clean, ad-free interface that makes a lovely digital photo frame with Google Photos.

Smart home control

Both ecosystems now support Matter, the industry standard that lets devices work across platforms, which makes your choice of assistant less of a lock-in than it used to be. Alexa still has the edge in device compatibility and routines, and several Echo models double as Zigbee and Thread hubs, so you can connect sensors and bulbs without a separate bridge.

Google’s strength is its own hardware: Nest thermostats, doorbells and cameras integrate beautifully with Nest displays and the Google Home app.

Strengths

  • Echo: widest range of speakers and displays
  • Echo: built-in Zigbee hub on many models
  • Nest: excellent answers and Google app integration
  • Both: Matter support reduces lock-in

Weaknesses

  • Echo: Alexa+ requires Prime or subscription
  • Echo: displays show some promotions
  • Nest: smaller hardware range
  • Nest: fewer third-party smart home skills

Privacy

Both companies offer physical microphone switches, camera shutters on displays with cameras, and dashboards to review and delete voice recordings. Google offers auto-delete for activity after a set period; Amazon lets you choose not to save recordings. Whichever you choose, spend five minutes in the privacy settings on day one.

Our pick: Amazon Echo

Amazon’s wider range of hardware and stronger smart home control make Echo the better foundation for most homes — unless you are all-in on Google.
