Design and comfort

The Series 11 is thin, light and understated, available in aluminium or titanium in two sizes. It suits a suit as easily as a gym kit, and the aluminium models get tougher Ion-X glass that Apple says is twice as scratch-resistant as before.

The Ultra 3 is a big 49mm titanium watch with a flat sapphire front, a raised edge to protect the screen, a customisable Action button and a loud emergency siren. It looks and feels like a tool watch. Some people love the size; smaller wrists may find it heavy for sleep tracking.

Display

Both use bright, always-on LTPO OLED displays. The Ultra 3’s screen is the largest Apple has made, with thinner borders and a wide-angle OLED that is easier to read at an angle — useful when glancing mid-run or on a bike. It also has a Night Mode that turns the interface red to protect your night vision.

Battery life

This is the biggest practical difference. Apple rates the Series 11 at up to 24 hours, which comfortably covers a day plus a night of sleep tracking with a quick morning top-up. The Ultra 3 is rated at up to 42 hours, and up to 72 hours in Low Power Mode — enough for a long weekend or an ultramarathon without a charger.

Health features

Here the two watches are nearly identical. Both offer heart-rate and ECG readings, blood oxygen, temperature sensing, sleep apnea notifications and the newer hypertension notifications, which look for signs of high blood pressure over 30-day periods. Both give you a daily Sleep Score and support Workout Buddy, Apple’s AI coaching feature.

Shared health features

Heart Heart rate, ECG, irregular rhythm notifications
Blood pressure Hypertension notifications (where available)
Sleep Sleep stages, Sleep Score, sleep apnea notifications
Other Blood oxygen, temperature sensing, Vitals app
Safety Fall and crash detection, Emergency SOS

Outdoor and safety extras

The Ultra 3 adds features aimed at adventurers. Satellite connectivity lets you send Emergency SOS messages and share your location when you have no mobile signal. Precision dual-frequency GPS improves accuracy in cities and forests, the depth gauge and dive computer app support recreational dives, and the siren can be heard from a long distance. For most people these are nice-to-haves; for hikers and sailors, satellite SOS alone may justify the price.

  • Series 11: thin, light and stylish
  • Series 11: half the price
  • Ultra 3: two to three days of battery
